Skill At
Arms Competition 2007
(+44) 01444 871 900
Recently Ditchling Common Stud hosted an International Skill-at-Arms
competition for the British Tentpegging Association (BTA) between the
UK and South African ladies teams.
The competition covered tentpegging with sword and lance( section, half
section and individual) ,two rings and a peg using sword and lance, Orange
Slicing and peg using sword, Sword/Lance and Revolver. Nowadays a pricker
is used instead of the revolver. This was the first civilian hosted competition
of its type to be held in this country. The horses were provided by the
Royal Horse Artillery, the Royal Army Veterinary Corps, Ditchling Common
Stud and members of the Tentpegging Association.
South Africa is the strongest mounted Skill-at-Arms country in the world.
The five ladies that represented them were chosen out of a pool of 60.
Great Britain has a much smaller pool to call on. However, our ladies
gave the South Africans a run for their medals.
Joyce Dudeney won the gold medal for individual pegging with lance and
silver for the individual pegging with sword. Jackie Chandler won the
bronze medal for pegging with sword. Sarah King won silver medal for individual
pegging with lance, Emma Hale won the gold medal for two oranges and a
peg. Joyce Dudeney and Sarah King also won the bronze in both the ½
section lance and also with sword. Sarah King was also awarded the trophy
for the highest British scores. Gunner Sophie Grant from the King’s
Troop was also in the team.
No UK team has been as successful against South Africa in the past.
